Nursing Resource Guide for End-of-Life Care
Many of the residents who are cared for in long-term care will experience their final days in the nursing home. As caregivers, we know that these final days of life can be both vulnerable and meaningful moments for these residents and their families.
The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association has developed a set of Nursing Resource Guides. These quick-reference sheets offer clinicians valuable information on a variety of symptoms and topics related to palliative care.
The End-of-Life Nursing Guide walks the nurse through recognizing signs of the active dying process, anticipating common symptoms such as dyspnea, delirium, and secretions, and ways to intervene with evidence‑based pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies.
It also emphasizes communication, psychosocial support, and the nurse’s role as an advocate, educator, and comfort provider in those critical hours. Embedding the insights from this guide into practice can strengthen your nursing team’s ability to deliver compassionate and person‑centered end-of-life care.
